Engine Mechanic Career Path

The engine mechanic at the car service is a technical specialist of a narrow profile, he is engaged in servicing, repairing and diagnosing of engines. This term is often used by specialists in servicing piston engines. There is an even narrower specialization of this profession - a specialist in engine parts.

The engine specialist has an extensive knowledge in the field of engine repair of different brands, he knows what a working engine looks like and how to eliminate any malfunction in his work. 

Engine Mechanic duties

Engine Overhaul. A number of technological operations, in addition to boring the block and grinding the crankshaft, washing all the parts and engine, handling the cylinders, checking the crankshaft and connecting rods, cleaning the oil channels, checking and regulating the fuel equipment, repairing the water and oil pump.

 Restoration of working capacity of the motor. The motorist carries out a change of the motor rings and crankshaft inserts, the replacement of the valve glands, the change of the camshaft, the change of the hydraulic compensators, regulates the valve clearances.

Diagnosis of engines for cars and trucks. Visual inspection, checking the noise and power of the engine, diagnostics of the system: cooling, lubrication, starting, exhaust, engine suspension, cylinder piston group, air filling system, gas distribution. If there are questions about the increase in fuel consumption, then the minder checks all the main characteristics of the engine, conducts diagnostics of fuel consumption.

Assembly and installation of the engine after repair. After carrying out repair work, the engine is put in, the engine mechanic is engaged in its assembly and installation, rolling at idle speed. 

Diesel Engine Mechanic

Repair, diagnostics of all systems and maintenance of diesel cars is handled by a diesel engine mechanic. The duties of a specialist in diesel engines include: overhauling diesel engines, repairing the heads of the engine block, changing belts and repairing the timing system, repairing diesel engine blocks, replacing pistons, rings, crankshafts, liners, repairing internal combustion engines, repairing fuel systems and injectors. 

Transmission Repair Specialist

Transmissions are divided into types, their type directly depends on the type of energy being converted: they are mechanical, electrical, hydro-mechanical, combined.

The gearbox mechanic is required to know all the basic elements in the transmission and understand the operating principles of this mechanism. 

The repair of the transmission includes: repair of the semi-axle, propeller shaft, replacement of the CV joint, restoration of the coupling, cable, clutch drive, replacement of the differential, repair of the transmission.

The duties of the mechanic include:

• System check and fault analysis;

• Dismantling of defective parts;

• Work on disassembly of the units of the unit, with sub-diagnostic diagnostics

• Defect, detection of broken elements;

• Assembly of the unit after replacement of necessary parts;

• Installation of the transmission. 

The profession of engine mechanic is very responsible, since one has to deal with the engine of the car that has a complex construction and the cost of which is quite high. But the master, subsequently never remains without work.
