Profession Features: Engine Mechanic/Transmission Specialist

A vehicle service engine mechanic is a technical worker of a narrow specialization dealing with servicing, repairing and diagnosing internal combustion engines. This term is often used in respect to specialists in servicing piston motors. A specialist in motor units is even a narrower specialization of this profession.

The engine mechanic has extensive knowledge in the field of engine repair of different brands, he knows how a working motor looks like and how to eliminate any malfunction in its operation.

Engine Mechanic Duties

The engine overhaul. A number of technological operations which include washing all the parts and motor, handling the cylinders, checking the crankshaft and connecting rods, cleaning the oil channels, checking and regulating the fuel equipment, repairing the water and oil pump besides the block boring and the crankshaft grinding.

Restoration the motor operation. The engine mechanic carries out a change of the motor rings and crankshaft inserts, the replacement of the valve seals, the change of the camshaft, the change of the hydraulic compensators, regulates the valve clearances.

Diagnosis of engines for cars and trucks. Visual inspection, noise and power check of the engine, diagnostics of the system: cooling, lubrication, starting, exhaust, engine suspension, cylinder piston group, air filling system, gas distribution. If the increase in fuel consumption takes place, then the mechanic checks all the main characteristics of the engine, conducts diagnostics of fuel consumption.

Assembly and installation of the motor after repair. After carrying out repair works, the engine is put in its place, the engine mechanic is engaged in its assembly and installation, rolling at idle.

Diesel Engine Mechanic Career

A diesel engine mechanic handles repair, diagnostics of all systems and maintenance of diesel cars. The duties of such a specialist include: overhauling diesel engines, renovation of the engine block heads, changing belts and repairing the timing system, repairing diesel engine blocks, replacing pistons, rings, crankshafts, liners, repairing internal combustion engines, fuel system and injectors.

Transmission Repair Specialist

Transmission is divided into types, the type directly depends on the energy being converted: it can be mechanical, electrical, hydrovolume, combined.

Transmission specialist is required to know all the basic elements in the transmission and understand the operating principles of this mechanism.

Works on the transmission repair: restoration of the semi-axle, drive shaft, replacement of the CV joint, renovation of the coupling, cable, clutch drive, replacement of the differential, repair of the transmission.

The duties of the transmission specialist include:

  •         systems diagnostic check and failure analysis
  •         dismounting of defective parts
  •         disassembly of the unit assemblies with further detailed diagnostics
  •         detection of broken elements
  •         assembly of the unit after replacement of certain parts
  •         transmission mounting

The engine mechanic profession is responsible since one has to deal with a car engine that has a complex construction and its cost is quite high. Though, an expert of this specialization will never remain without work and will have constant high earnings.
