Diagnostic of car alternators with oscilloscope

► Car alternator check with oscilloscope. Test benches of MSG Equipment - equipment for car services stations and workshops

While testing an alternator, it is very convenient to use an oscilloscope to view the amplitude and output wave form. The oscilloscope shows how correctly an alternator operates and defines the cause of breakdowns.

 The most common defects that the oscilloscope identifies:

  • Breakdown or disconnection of a diode in the diode bridge;
  • Shorting of the stator windings (inter-turn, to the stator housing or inter-winding).

If there is a malfunction, in this situation, large voltage ripples (large variable component) will appear.

Using an oscilloscope while alternator checking minimizes possible breakdowns. The oscilloscope is used in many fields of electronics. While alternator checking, the oscilloscope helps to find the output wave form and determine if there is the signal at all. But, it is always worth remembering that the check of alternator operation with the help of the oscilloscope, is based on the amplitude of the output voltage.

There are some features of the procedure that you have to know about. Even if the test is successful, you must be able to interpret correctly the results. An expert with the appropriate qualifications and experience in this field can understand the results of the checking.

Professional diagnostic equipment for alternator

The oscilloscope is a simple test device that is not useful for diagnostics of all alternators and any cars. That is why professional equipment (benches and tools) is used in service stations for conducting high-quality diagnostics.

For example, MS006 test bench checks 12 and 24-volt alternators (with a maximum load of 50A and 25A). The bench helps determine the cause of the breakdown, test the alternator after repair. It is equipped with an oscilloscope, can print out the results of diagnostic and has many other additional features.

The test bench for alternators and starters MS002 COM checks 12V alternators up to 200A and 24V – 100A. It is powered by a 3-phase network with a voltage of 380V.

The bench MS004 COM is useful for diagnostics of starters and alternators. The maximum load for 12V alternators is 100A, for 24V generators - 50A, such a load is enough to check the unit for operability. The bench is powered by a single-phase 220V network. The compact bench is suitable for small workshops, easily placed on the desktop of a car service specialist.
